Chapter Ten

In the years he had worked in the hotel, Sym had never visited the top floor, and was blown away by how beautiful it was. Turk had evidently kept his packing minimal, as the only evidence of him being there was a single case which had been neatly left in the corner by the window.

“Wow.”

“Right?” Turk himself was equally impressed and joined Sym at the window to enjoy the view of the City.

“I had no idea that toy manufacturing paid so well.”

Turk wasn’t entirely sure what to say in response. Growing up in the North Pole had given him no real sense of money, or of who earned what. He hoped to goodness he hadn’t blown his cover. Exactly how much was the son of a toy mogul supposed to be earning, anyway?

“Well, my dad is very generous when it comes to Christmas bonuses.”

A good lie, if he did say so himself.

“I need to come and work for your dad, then,” Sym chuckled, mostly to himself, as he looked out into the stillness of the evening.

“Is money a problem for you?”

Sym was slightly taken aback at the question. He’d been raised never to discuss money, politics, or religion, and he had never before met someone who would ask outright about any of those topics.

But, strangely, he liked it. He found it to be a refreshing change of pace.

“Not really,” he said, not lifting his gaze from the City below. “Working on my PhD full time doesn’t allow much time to take work here, but I’ll take shifts where I can get them.”

“Well, at least you’re being paid for this evening.”

“Actually, no. I’m here voluntarily so the worker who was supposed to be here could have the night off. She wanted to be with her family.”

In that instance, Turk couldn’t help himself. He found himself so drawn to this total stranger, his body acted of its own accord, and he leaned in for a kiss.

It was a kiss Sym gratefully returned, and the two men stood for a full minute enjoying their moment of intimacy. It was only broken when, despite himself, Turk reached over to pull off Sym’s top.

“No,” Sym said, breaking the kiss.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m not ready for you to see me without my shirt on yet. I’m fat right now.”

Turk leaned back and looked at him. He certainly didn’t look fat, at least not through his clothes. His skinny jeans fit well, and his wool knit sweater contoured his shoulders and arms nicely. He frowned.

“Are you sure?”

Possibly not the best way to handle that situation.

“Yes. I’m sure.” Sym’s tone was clipped, and Turk was worried he’d annoyed him somehow, so followed his wishes and moved his hand away.

“I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have…that was too forward of me.”

“Oh, no.” Sym gently placed his hand on Turk’s knee, in a move that sent a shiver up Turk’s spine. “Don’t apologize. It’s me. I just…yeah. I’m not feeling my best right now.”
